Want to be a Dragon Diva?

Membership FAQ’S

  1. Can I join the Dragon Divas even if I’m still in treatment?
Yes, definitely! Even if one is not able to currently paddle, there are many opportunities for participation, as well as the wonderful support that comes with being a team member.
  2. I don’t swim and/or don’t like water.  Can I still be a Dragon Diva?
Absolutely.  There are many options – there are opportunities for using talents you may have such as photography, fund raising, organizing tasks and events, cheerleading at practices and festivals. You will also be a part of the camaraderie and support between sister Divas.  If you do decide to paddle it will be important to know that there will be “capsize drills” to maintain the utmost safety.
  3. Do I have to be physically fit?
While it is important in one’s breast cancer journey to exercise regularly and the goal is to become more physically fit, the Dragon Divas are at varying levels of fitness, and continuing to improve their level of physical fitness. Dragon boat racing is our focus during the summer months and we have organized exercise classes during the “off season” months that one can participate in. If you don’t/haven’t exercised, the training crew is available to provide exercises for you to begin a program.
  4. What is the time commitment?
Our Hope Team, for new members and those who are more “recreational” paddlers, practices one time per week. Our Courage Team, for more experienced members that want a more focused, competitive experience, paddles two nights a week. We expect members on our Courage Team to also work out on their own outside of the scheduled paddling practices, and encourage it for our Hope Team members. In addition, the Dragon Divas participate in Dragon Boat festivals about once per month during the months of June through September.

During our “off-season,” we have opportunities to work out together and encourage each other to maintain our physical activities. Many members get together to cross-country ski, participate in 5K’s, go hiking or walking, etc.  There are also fun social events planned throughout the year, one large fund-raising event and occasional committee meetings.

  5. What kind of equipment do I need?
There is no special equipment needed.  The team provides life jackets and paddles.  For festivals, paddlers are required to wear shoes with a back (no flip flops) so it is recommended to wear that type of footwear to practice.  Dress knowing you will get wet – it is a water sport!
  6. I canoe – is it the same?
No- the strokes used when paddling a dragon boat are different. Instruction is provided, as are demonstrations of proper paddling technique.
  7. Is there a cost for being a Dragon Diva?
There is a small annual membership fee to join the team at all levels.  There are travel costs to festivals which are the responsibility of each Dragon Diva, but we try to share rooms and carpool. There is also a level of commitment to a team committee and team fundraisers.
  8. How do I keep informed about what is going on with the team?
The Dragon Divas have an internal, members only website where practice information, member demographics, committee information and updates are posted on a regular basis.
  9. How do I learn more?
Please send an email to dragondivas@gmail.com to request additional information.
